Motorists are being warned of delays ahead of the closure of a busy city-centre bridge.

Bristol's Plimsoll Bridge on the A3029 Brunel Way will close overnight from 20:00 GMT on Tuesday to allow essential repairs and maintenance to take place.

The swing bridge, which travels over Cumberland Basin and is a major route to Bristol Airport and Ashton Gate Stadium, will reopen the following morning from 06:00.

Bristol City Councillor Ed Plowden, chair of the transport and connectivity committee, said the full closure of the "aging structure" had been planned to go ahead overnight to make as "little impact as possible".

"We recommend leaving more time for your journeys or finding alternative routes while the bridge is closed," he said.

The planned work includes repairing the structure's bearings and maintaining its drains.

Plowden said the work would improve the bridge's resilience and "reduce the need for it to be closed in the future".

What are the diversions?

During the closure, all traffic will need to follow the signposted diversions.

Those travelling southbound will need to travel via Hotwell Road, Merchants Road, McAdam Way and onto Brunel Way.

For those travelling northbound, diversions will be via Brunel Lock Road, Merchants Road, Cumberland Basin Road, and then onto the Portway or Faraday Road.
