Polls close in Makerfield by-election
ReutersThe polls have now closed in the Makerfield by-election.
More than 30 polling stations across the Greater Manchester constituency opened their doors at 07:00 BST and closed at 22:00.
Counting of the ballot papers will begin as soon as possible, with the result expected to be declared in the early hours of Friday morning. A total of 14 candidates took part in the by-election, which was triggered by the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons.
Meanwhile voters in the Scottish constituencies of Arbroath and Broughty Ferry and Aberdeen South also headed to the polls earlier after their MPs stood down to take up posts as MSPs following May's Holyrood elections.
