West Midlands Fire Service said about 80 firefighters dealt with the blaze

Investigations into how a large fire broke out at a Birmingham scrapyard are continuing, according to West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS).

Firefighters were called to Alexander's Wharf, on Lifford Lane, Kings Norton, at 10:30 BST on Wednesday.

About 80 firefighters were dealing with the fire at its peak, with an aerial platform among the engines sent there.

Multiple visits to the site were made throughout the night and the incident was now closed, with all remaining hotspots extinguished, WMFS said.

WMFS advised residents nearby to close all windows and doors due to the significant amount of smoke that was being released

Alec McWilliam from WMFS told the BBC on Wednesday that the fire was thought to have started in the scrapyard and had spread to a nearby timber yard.

However, he said the Lifford Lane household recycling centre had not been affected.

Everyone was accounted for and multiple roads were closed throughout Wednesday.

The fire created a huge plume of black smoke in the area and residents nearby were also told to keep their windows and doors shut.
