A man and a woman have been arrested over a stabbing which police believe was an "isolated" attack.

The ambulance service reported a man with stab wounds walking on Gadsby Street, Nuneaton, shortly after 17:30 GMT on Sunday, police said. He was believed to have been attacked on Attleborough Road about 30 minutes earlier.

The man, in his 40s, "was taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening", said the Warwickshire force, which added he was in a stable condition.

Officers later arrested a man, 34, from Nuneaton, on suspicion of Grievous Bodily Harm, and a woman, 33, on suspicion of assisting an offender.

They remained in custody, police said.

Officers have appealed for any witnesses to the attack, or anyone with phone, doorbell or dashcam footage, to come forward.

Det Sgt Magnus McAuley said: "The man is making good progress and should hopefully recover from his injuries, but I know what's happened will be concerning for the community.

"We believe the attack to be isolated and have made two arrests so far. We're pursuing several lines of inquiry as we attempt to identify any other people who may have been involved."

McAuley added there would be more officers in the area and urged people to speak to them if they had any information or questions about what had happened.

The force said it used temporary powers to allow it to stop and search people and vehicles during initial inquiries and thanked everyone who co-operated.
