Specialist contractors appointed in August found that sections of the stonework had deteriorated

A museum in West Sussex will be closed for four months to allow for essential repairs of its roof to be undertaken.

The Horsham Museum and Art Gallery will be closed from 7 September until 5 January next year after specialist contractors found that sections of the stonework had deteriorated.

As a Grade II listed building, the museum requires specialist conservation work which can only be achieved with a closure, Horsham District Council said.

The council's deputy leader Mark Baynham said the repairs were "vital to protect our visitors, staff, collections and this important historic building".

The team will also refurbish three galleries as part of a wider programme of improvements during the closure.

When visitors return there will be a new costume gallery and a refreshed Age of Discovery gallery showcasing stories from Horsham in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

Baynham added: "We hope visitors will understand the need for this work and look forward to welcoming them back in the new year with an exciting programme of exhibitions and activities."
