A masseur has appeared in court charged with 55 sexual offences including attempted rape.

Terence McBrien, 72, from Alnwick, Northumberland, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth at the short hearing at Berwick Magistrates' Court.

The alleged offences, dating between 2011 and 2021, relate to 14 women and include sexual assault, intentional penetration without consent and voyeurism.

McBrien did not enter pleas during the hearing, which lasted less than 10 minutes, and was granted conditional bail. He will appear at Newcastle Crown Court on 16 April.

McBrien, who represented himself, walked past photographers and TV cameras outside court, wearing a tweed cap, jacket and tie.
