Solicitors for the restaurant argued it was a "culture hub" that serves as "a meeting place for the Portuguese community"

A Portuguese restaurant was told it can no longer play loud music late at night.

Restaurant O Sado had the conditions of its premises licence modified by Peterborough City Council at a licensing sub-committee meeting.

The Lincoln Road venue will now only be allowed to play ambient music, live or recorded, between 08:00 and 23:00 from Monday to Sunday.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said it is believed this is the first time a licensing amendment of this kind has been applied within Peterborough.

The application to review the restaurant's licence was made after numerous noise nuisance issues from mid-2024 onwards.

Issues continued despite the Pollution Control Team serving noise abatement notices and installing noise monitoring equipment, the meeting heard.

Business owner Dora Marques accepted the council's evidence and apologised for the noise nuisance issues.

She explained that some of the noise could be attributed to people not using Restaurant O Sado, who would congregate outside the property late at night.

Councillor Chris Harper stated that the new conditions will insist that all music played at the venue must be background noise only.
