Southwark Libraries named London winner for 2026

Southwark Libraries has been named the London winner of the British Book Awards 2026 Library of the Year, recognising its work to bring new and returning readers back into local branches.

Eight libraries and library authorities from across the UK and Ireland were selected as regional and country winners.

They were chosen from 42 finalists announced last month, with judges highlighting organisations that engage communities "in meaningful, lasting ways".

As part of the National Year of Reading, the government has also announced up to £150,000 in extra funding for public libraries. A total of £5,000 will be shared between the five English regional winners, including Southwark.

The To Be at Southwark Libraries campaign launched during a Books and Beyond open day at Canada Water Library in October 2025.

The initiative focuses on reconnecting residents with the full range of services available across the borough.

Karen Napier, CEO at the Reading Agency, said the winners "truly distinguished themselves through the scale of their ambition and the depth of their impact".

She added: "These winners showcase the transformative power of libraries to engage communities in meaningful, lasting ways, and the shortlisted entries demonstrate how thoughtful collaboration and innovation create immediate success and enduring legacy."

Southwark Libraries has 12 branches, including Canada Water Library, Peckham Library, and Camberwell Library, all offering free study spaces, computer access, and activities.

Southwark Council shared on social media: "From ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) lessons, to Rhyme Time, to finding a quiet corner to escape to a different world - our libraries are here for our residents.

"Since launching the campaign, we've seen a sustained rise in memberships and loans, and a growing sense of shared pride in these brilliant public spaces."
