Repairs to a collapsed wall are due to start before a road already shut for two months can reopen.

Westmorland and Furness Council said works to the side of Ormsgill Lane, to the north of How Tun Woods in Barrow, would start from 5 January and last for 13 weeks.

In early October the wall partially collapsed on to the road causing "a danger to the public", so the authority set up a long-term closure.

Councillor Peter Thornton said other roadworks in the Barrow area remain ongoing and added the council was working with companies "to balance the need for work to be carried out with a highways network that is as open as soon as possible".

The council has appointed contractor Allison Construction to carry out the repairs, which were weather dependant.

Ormsgill Lane is currently closed from the junction with Netherby Drive with an alternative route for vehicles via Ormsgill Lane, Quary Brow, Dalton Lane, Hawcoat Lane, Thorncliffe Road, Devonshire Road and Schneider Road.
