Plans for 210 homes 'a step too far'
Shropshire CouncilPlans for 210 new homes have been opposed by a town council, and one councillor has described them as "a step too far".
Bloor Homes have applied to Shropshire Council to develop an area of land between the A5 and Pulley Lane on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.
It described the proposed housing as a "logical addition to Shrewsbury" and a "desirable place to live".
But Shrewsbury town councillor Ben Jephcott said it was a natural corridor between Shrewsbury and Bayston Hill which should not be built on.
Jephcott said: "We need to draw the line as far as we possibly can.
"There are many reasons why this development is a step too far on this side of the town."
Another town councillor, Jon Tandy, said the site was also on a dangerous bend.
Shropshire councillor, Bernie Bentick, who represents Meole, has also raised concerns and said he wants the wildlife habitat of the area protecting.
Bloor Homes said the proposed development would include 20% affordable housing and would "blend local character with modern sustainable design principles to create a place for residents to be proud of".
It also said in its application the site, which runs close to the Rea Brook, was at low risk of flooding.
Nearly 330 objections have been lodged, with only two comments in support of the scheme. A period of consultation on the plans is due to end on Sunday.
Jephcott accepted it was difficult to stop applications like this, because Shropshire Council did not have a valid Local Plan.
All councils are required to draw up this document, to set out where homes can be built, but Shropshire's plan was rejected by planning inspectors.
Jephcott said: "With no forward Local Plan, and it's open season on major developments, and developers are piling in."
This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations.
