A man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a crash which killed a woman.

Northumbria Police said it was pursuing a BMW which had failed to stop when it crashed into a Volkswagen Sharan on the A19 near Sunderland, at about 02:55 GMT on Sunday.

A woman in her 20s, who was a passenger in the BMW, died at the scene and a male passenger in his 20s remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Kane Farragher, 24 and from Birkenhead, is also charged with causing death by driving while disqualified and serious injury by dangerous driving, and will appear before South Tyneside magistrates later.

The male driver of the Volkswagen was taken to hospital, but his injuries were not thought to be serious.

The force has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has confirmed it will be conducting an independent investigation.
