'Legacy' ships up for sale as fleet is modernised
BBCShips transporting passengers to the Isles of Scilly have been put up for sale.
The cargo ship Gry Maritha, built in 1982, and Scillonian III ferry, which came into service in 1977, were put up for sale on 13 February, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group (ISSG) said.
The group said the vessels were placed on the market as it "looked carefully and responsibly toward the future".
The ISSG said it was about to begin the introduction of two new vessels - Menawethan in June, and Scillonian IV in March 2027.
It said: "For generations, these vessels have been far more than ships.
"They have been lifelines carrying freight, post, provisions and vehicles; transporting families, visitors and returning islanders whilst also supporting businesses.
"They are woven into the fabric of island life and hold a very special place in the hearts of many."
Isles of Scilly Steamship GroupISSG said as it modernised its fleet to secure the long-term resilience, reliability and sustainability of sea links to the islands, it was "deeply conscious of the history and legacy" of the current vessels.
It said there would be an opportunity for the community, visitors, former crew and all those with a connection to the ships to celebrate them.
It added: "We recognise that this news may bring mixed emotions, Gry Maritha and Scillonian III have shaped journeys, livelihoods and memories across decades.
"As we prepare to honour them, we do so with sincere thanks for all they have given to Scilly."
