Thieves broke into the town hall and stole the chains on 1 February, police say

A man has been arrested in connection with the theft of the mayor of Dewsbury's ceremonial chain in a burglary at the town hall.

The break-in happened at about 20:15 GMT on 1 February, with the value of the chain, which dates back to 1897, estimated to be tens of thousands of pounds, according to West Yorkshire Police.

A 47-year-old man was arrested on Saturday at an address in Mixenden on suspicion of theft and possession of criminal property.

He had since been released on police bail, meanwhile the search for the chain continued, a force spokesperson said.

Anyone with information about the theft was asked to contact West Yorkshire Police.
