Mystery knitter adorns town for D-Day anniversary

A mystery knitter has adorned a postbox in a Shropshire town centre in honour of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

The hand-knitted creation depicts a range of battle scenes from D-Day, when the Allies invaded to retake Nazi-occupied Europe.

It appeared overnight on Tuesday on a postbox outside Tesco on Bridgnorth High Street.

So far, no-one has stepped forward to claim credit for the decorative tribute.

During World War Two, troops from the UK, US, Canada and France attacked German forces on the coast of northern France in 1944.

D-Day was the largest naval, air and land operation ever attempted, and marked the start of the campaign to liberate Nazi-occupied north-west Europe.

Also marking the anniversary in Bridgnorth, a beacon will be lit on Panpudding Hill, which can be viewed from the Castle grounds and Severn Valley Railway.

The event runs from 19:30 BST to 22:00 on Thursday, with the lighting taking place at 21:15, as part of a beacon lighting across the country.
