Work on £5.8m town centre revamp due to start

Work on a major town centre regeneration project is set to start next week, a council has said.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council is investing £5.8m in new paving, lighting, trees and seating.

It follows £5.2m that was spent on rebuilding the covered market, which was officially opened in February.

Contractor Tarmac will begin preparation work on Monday, decluttering and removing redundant fixtures from the previous market structure.

The council said it had worked with Tarmac to minimise disruption to traders and shoppers.

"This exciting and high-quality regeneration will provide a major enhancement of the Market Place, creating an attractive, successful and vibrant space," a council spokesperson said.

They also highlighted the ongoing work being done to transform the former Palmers Department Store into a new library and "learning hub".

For the duration of the work starting next week, the two-day market will be relocated to the northern side of the covered market, before locating back to the southern piazza area.

The entire scheme is scheduled to be completed by April 2025.
