A dilapidated fountain dating back to the 1950s is set to be restored.

The ornate structure, situated in Derby's Markeaton Park, is part of the historic Markeaton Hall Estate, with the main house being demolished in 1964.

Allestree councillor Steve Hassall said plans for the "distinctive feature" - including identifying and matching the original paintwork, a full clean, and treatment of the metal work - were in place following talks with Derby City Council's parks team.

The council said the restoration was part of wider work planned for Markeaton Park.

The council is also exploring options for a suitable centrepiece.

"This is exactly the kind of investment in our parks that makes a visible difference," Hassall said.

"It helps protect our heritage while improving the look and feel of the space for everyone who uses it."

Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, cabinet member for street pride, parks, and leisure, added: "We are incredibly proud of our award winning Markeaton Park and its rich history.

"As well as enhancing and restoring other areas of the park, our team are working on restoring an ornate fountain structure that was part of the Markeaton Hall estate which dates back to the 1950s.

"We look forward to being able to share further updates as the restoration progresses."
