A murder investigation is under way after a man was attacked close to a Birmingham railway station.

West Midlands Police said it was called to Birchfield Road, in the Perry Barr area of the city, at 21:50 BST on Thursday.

It said a man was found in a serious condition and nothing could be done to save him.

Initial inquiries suggested he had been assaulted, the force added, and officers were working to identify who was responsible.

The area where the man was found, close to Perry Barr station, has been cordoned off and police are examining footage from security cameras.

The force said the investigation was at an early stage and it was asking for anyone with information or potentially useful images from dashcams to get in touch.
