The trial at Sheffield Crown Court collapsed in its fifth week

A former juror has been arrested on suspicion of unauthorised research and sharing it with other jurors, police have said.

The man, who is 75, allegedly committed the offences while serving as a juror on a trial involving serious sexual allegations at Sheffield Crown Court last year.

South Yorkshire Police said on Thursday that he had been bailed pending further inquiries.

In November, the Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, halted the trial and referred the "alleged jury irregularity" to the Attorney General.

South Yorkshire Police said the man had been arrested on suspicion of two offences under the Juries Act 1974.

The trial in question had to be abandoned after five weeks, although further details about the case cannot be reported.

The court heard there would be a retrial in that case.
