Six firefighters have been treated in hospital after two fire engines collided in central London on Saturday.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said the fire engines were responding to an incident in Islington, when the collision happened at about 22:17 GMT at the junction of Farringdon Road on Clerkenwell Road.

Five firefighters have since been discharged, the LFB said, adding it was hopeful that the remaining firefighter will be discharged "very soon".

LFB Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne confirmed that six crew members were treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service (LAS) and then taken to hospital for checks.

The brigade and the Metropolitan Police have started an investigation into the incident.

An LAS spokesperson said ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, an incident response officer and paramedics from the hazardous area response team were sent to the scene.

LFB said all staff involved in the incident "continue to receive welfare support and we would like to thank our partners for their assistance".
