Police were called to Swainson Road on Sunday afternoon

Five boys have been arrested after a man was stabbed in the chest in Liverpool.

Four 14-year-olds and one 15-year-old were being held on suspicion of wounding with intent, Merseyside Police said.

The 23-year-old victim also suffered lacerations to his face and hand in the attack, which happened in Fazakerley on Sunday afternoon.

Officers had been called to Swainson Road at about 15:45 GMT after reports a group of males were being chased by a second group of males. The victim later self-presented at hospital where he remained in a stable condition, the force said.

"This was clearly a shocking incident which has led to a male suffering serious injuries," Det Insp Paula Jones said.

"Five males were arrested very quickly and are currently in custody and we continue to make enquiries to establish what has taken place.

"We would ask for anyone who was in the area of Swainson Road yesterday afternoon who saw or heard anything suspicious to contact us."
