A long-awaited road should be completed in spring, according to a new report.

The Carlisle Southern Link Road will connect Junction 42 of the M6 with the A595 to the west of Cumbria.

It is hoped the five-mile (8km) road will ease congestion in Carlisle and connect the planned 10,000-home St Cuthbert's Garden Village to the city centre.

The road was due to open in the summer of 2025, but the report, that will be considered by Cumberland Council next week, stated the delay was due to "higher-than-average rainfall" during construction.

The document outlined the road would be opened to the public following a satisfactory safety audit.

Members of the local authority's highways and transport strategic board are due to meet at the Civic Centre on 29 January to discuss the report, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
