A teenager has been arrested over social media posts encouraging school children to engage in violent behaviour

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with social media posts encouraging violence among school children, police said.

The teenager, from Sheffield, was held on suspicion of malicious communications, encouraging or assisting crime and an alleged public order offence.

It comes after South Yorkshire Police said last week it had been monitoring social media as posts linked to "red v blue school wars", a national online trend, began circulating in the region.

Insp Katie Hammond said the force was taking the matter seriously and doing "everything in our power to deal with it swiftly and robustly".

"We know how worried parents, families, staff and pupils have been since these social media posts started appearing," she said.

"We have provided support and reassurance to our local schools and communities through a high-visibility presence and increased patrols."

She said the majority of children knew the trend was "reckless and irresponsible" and "not at all reflective" of the real relationships between schools and pupils.
