Pool to shut for six weeks for boiler replacement
Westmorland and Furness CouncilA council owned swimming pool will be shut for six weeks while its old gas boiler is replaced.
Work to install an air source heat pump at Appleby Leisure Centre in Cumbria is due to start on 30 March, with the pool closing while work takes place.
GLL, which runs the leisure centre, said it was contacting schools to discuss providing alternative sessions to swimming lessons.
Owners Westmorland and Furness Council said dates of a further, shorter closure to complete the pool's connection to the new heating system will be confirmed at a later date, but the gym and changing rooms will remain open throughout.
The Lib-dem council said the move, funded though a £388,000 government grant, would help the authority reach net zero by 2037.
The authority said it has recently installed triple glazing and 190 solar panels at the leisure centre, with further funding secured for decarbonisation work at Kendal Leisure Centre, Kendal Market and council offices at South Lakeland House.
