A council has shared the first look at a leisure complex proposed to replace the Basingstoke Aquadrome.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council said Places Leisure, which operates over 90 leisure facilities across the UK, has been selected as its preferred bidder to take forward plans for the new centre.

The proposed facilities would include a 25-metre eight-lane competition pool, a 20-metre four-lane teaching pool, leisure waters with flumes, a 150-station gym, three group exercise studios, a cycling studio, indoor play activities, party rooms and a café.

A planning application for the new aquadrome is expected to be submitted in 2026 and, subject to approval, the facility could open in 2029.

Places Leisure is also proposing further investment to bring more facilities, which will include a "luxury" health suite, Reformer Pilates studio and padel tennis courts, the council added.

Dan Walker, Business Development Director at Places Leisure said: "We are thrilled to be named as the preferred bidder for this incredible project as well as taking over the operation and management of the golf facility in the town and Tadley Health and Fitness Centre.

"The new landmark leisure destination is an investment in health and wellbeing for the entire community."

He added: "We look forward to working closely with local partners, colleagues, residents and community groups to shape a facility that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of the area."

It comes after US based Great Wolf Resorts' submitted plans last month to build a 512-bedroom hotel, water park, restaurants and retail space at the current site of Basingstoke Golf Centre on Worting Road.
