Pints to be poured again as villagers buy their local pub
The Brig Inn Pub & HubResidents of a south of Scotland village have picked up the keys for their local pub after securing community ownership.
A fundraising campaign saw people in Brydekirk raise the funds needed to buy the Brig Inn, near the River Annan, which has been empty since 2020.
The purchase - backed by a range of organisations as well as an online crowdfunding appeal - has now been completed by the The Brig Inn Pub & Hub community benefit society.
The group plans to restore the building, which will then operate as a small pub and village shop.
Richard DorrellSecretary Evie Bywaters said they were "deeply grateful" to the organisations and individuals which had given them financial backing.
"The breadth of support reflects the strength of feeling for the Brig Inn and the value people place on community-owned spaces," she said.
"This milestone represents the culmination of several years of volunteer-led effort.
"We would particularly like to acknowledge the dedication and persistence of past and present committee members, whose hard work, resilience and commitment have carried the project to this successful conclusion."
The Brig Inn Pub & HubNow that they have taken over ownership, the next phase of the group's plans is to renovate the building and develop it as a "vibrant community pub and hub".
"Work will begin on detailed plans and initial improvements, ensuring the building is restored in a way that is both welcoming and financially sustainable," said Evie.
"Later this year, we also hope to launch a community share offer, giving more people the opportunity to play a direct role in shaping the Brig Inn's future and strengthening its long-term security."
Everyone in the area has been encouraged to get involved and help in whatever way they can.
"The Brig Inn belongs to the community, and its success will depend on continued local involvement and enthusiasm," she added.
"The Brig Inn has long been a central part of village life.
"Bringing it into community ownership ensures it can once again serve as a place for connection, activity and opportunity - run by the community, for the community."
