Brighton & Hove City Council says new traffic islands will be installed at the Aquarium junction

A major construction project in Brighton is entering its final months, the local council says.

Brighton & Hove City Council said the Valley Gardens project, which is now in its third phase, is scheduled to be completed this summer.

A spokesperson said work is due to start soon on the new paths and green space inside Steine Gardens.

Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure, said: "The new pavements and public space are a huge improvement on the previous layout, giving everyone more room to move around and travel through."

Since the start of the year, work has been taking place on the Aquarium junction.

The council said the old roundabout and traffic islands have been removed and are being replaced with a new traffic light-controlled junction, safer crossing points and more space for pedestrians.

New traffic islands will be built from 13 April, and temporary traffic lights would be used for up to five weeks while the new junction lights are installed.

Marine Parade crossing will remain closed during this work, the council said.

Muten added: "The new junction is going to make traffic flow easier and crossing from Steine Gardens to the seafront much safer.

"I appreciate this part of the project is going to be disruptive and I thank everyone for their patience."
