Cemetery work to be carried out 'sensitively'
North Tyneside CouncilWork to improve facilities at a cemetery is being carried out "sensitively", the council has said.
The project at Dudley Cemetery in North Tyneside includes repairs to roof and brickwork of the chapel, strengthening of its foundations and improvements to drainage and electrical system.
In addition, the toilet block will be demolished and replaced with a unisex, accessible facility.
To avoid disruption the work, which is expected to last for six weeks, will pause during funerals and services, North Tyneside Council said.
Located on Dudley Lane, the cemetery opened in 1934 and is home to a number of Commonwealth war graves, reflecting its role as a place of local remembrance.
Councillor Hannah Johnson, the council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "This is an important project for Dudley Cemetery, helping to ensure it remains a dignified and welcoming place of remembrance for families and visitors for years to come.
"We've also agreed that if any burials are scheduled while work is ongoing, the team will pause so that services can proceed without disruption."
