A man has been arrested after a head-on collision injured eight people.

Northumbria Police said a blue Audi Q3 was travelling northbound on the A1 near Rosebrough, Northumberland, when it entered the southbound carriageway and collided with a silver Mitsubishi Mirage at about 19:30 GMT on Saturday.

Of the eight people who were taken to hospital for treatment, a man in his 40s, who was a passenger in the Mitsubishi, suffered serious injuries. He remains in a stable condition.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Five people in the Audi and three people in the Mitsubishi were injured.

A section of the road was closed for several hours and it has since re-opened.

The force has urged any witnesses to come forward and added it wanted to hear from anyone who has dashcam footage.
