The States of Guernsey has said it is taking steps to ensure its heavy vehicles are clearly displaying weight and legal speed limit.

It comes after the States said in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request there were more than 200 States-owned vehicles over the two-tonne unladen threshold but there was no record of how many displayed the required information.

Guernsey traffic law requires all vehicles weighing over the threshold to clearly display their unladen weight and legal speed limit of 25mph (40km/h).

The States said it had "not historically held a single consolidated record" of vehicle weights but this would be corrected by 31 March following an inspection.

The States said it owned 236 vehicles which exceeded the unladen weight threshold and 143 which are considered borderline.

These include vehicles operated by Guernsey Police, States Works and the dairy.

The information about vehicle weights must be displayed "in a prominent position on the left hand side of the vehicle", the law states.

The States said in response to the FOI request: "All vehicles that are above the limit or deemed to be borderline are being inspected and the legally required markings will be applied where missing."

It added training and communication would be put in place by July to ensure drivers were not unknowingly operating vehicles which do not meet the legal requirement.
