A stretch of the M4 is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day following a significant diesel spillageacross the carriageway, National Highways has said.

The motorway has been closed westbound between junction 16 and 17 near Chippenham after an HGV collided with the central reservation barrier shortly after 02:00 GMT on Thursday.

One lane of the eastbound carriageway has also been shut due to the "final position of the HGV".

National Highways said "extensive repairs" need to be carried out to 300m of central reservation safety barrier and almost 150m of road needs to be resurfaced.

Diversion routes are in place and drivers are being advised to avoid the area if possible and allow extra time for journeys.
