Police investigate report of rape in town car park

Police are investigating a report of a woman in her 20s being raped in a car park in West Sussex.

The incident is believed to have taken place in Lyndhurst Road car park in Worthing shortly after 20:00 GMT on Wednesday.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said the woman was being supported by specialist officers and inquiries were under way.

Det Supt Jay Mendis-Gunasekera said: "We are at the early stages of this investigation and the victim will continue to receive our full support as this progresses.

"Detectives are exploring a number of lines of inquiry to identify and locate a suspect."

Mendis-Gunasekera added there would be increased police with the car park expected to close on Thursday morning as police gather and preserve evidence at the site.
