Council crackdown on fly-tipping and waste crime

A Kent council is working with police in a bid to tackle fly-tipping and waste crime.

Maidstone Borough Council and Kent Police carried out an operation, titled Don't Mess with Maidstone, which saw several fines issued on Thursday.

The council said a commercial operator in Bredhurst Woods was issued a £300 fine for failing to provide a waste transfer note.

The authority also reported that a vehicle carrying scrap and waste metal in Thurnham was stopped and the driver fined £300 for not having a valid waste carrier's licence and no waste transfer note.

It added that a stop check in Pearsons Green Road, Brenchley, resulted in another £300 fine being issued after a vehicle transporting scrap metal failed to produce a waste transfer note.

Cabinet member for environmental services and enforcement, Clive English, said: "Fly-tipping and illegal waste disposal are serious crimes that harm our environment and community."
