Dogs must be on a lead on agricultural land and when within 5m (16ft) of livestock

Dogs being walked in Jersey will need to be kept on a tighter lead in future when on agricultural land and near to livestock.

States members approved an amendment to the Dogs Law to make it an offence if a dog is not on a lead within 5m (16ft) and under control when near farm animals.

Deputy Hilary Jeune, who brought forward the changes, said the law would make it clear how to control pets - the change was approved unanimously.

The amendment said better dog control could make rural areas safer for families and could protect children from distressing encounters with uncontrolled dogs. It added offenders could be fined up to £1,000.

Existing exemptions for dogs of livestock owners and police dogs remain unchanged.
