Four teenagers and a man charged with the murder of a 23-year-old who was hit by a car at a petrol station have been remanded in custody by a judge ahead of an expected plea hearing next month.

Daniel Ambler was found with serious injuries at the New Seaham Service Station forecourt in County Durham on 15 January and later died at the scene.

Barry Anderson, 51, and Ashton Anderson, 19, from Easington Colliery, along with Barry Logan Anderson, 18, from Peterlee, appeared before Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday via a video link.

Two 17-year-old boys, who were also charged with murder and violent disorder, were in court for the hearing. They cannot be named for legal reasons.

Judge Francis Laird KC remanded all five in custody to appear before him again on 17 February when, he said, he expected them to enter pleas.

Ambler's family previously paid tribute, describing him as a "kind-hearted soul".
