Tributes have been paid to Dame Shân Legge-Bourke who has died at the age of 82.

A former lady-in-waiting to the Princess Royal and close friend of the Royal Family, her daughter Tiggy was nanny to Prince William and Prince Harry.

A prominent figure in Welsh life, Dame Shân ran the sprawling Glanusk Estate, near Crickhowell in Powys, which she inherited from her late father Wilfred Bailey, the third Baron Glanusk, in 1948.

Her family said they were "devastated" by the loss on Sunday and called her "an inspiration".

In a statement, they said: "We are very sad to announce the death of the The Honourable Dame Shân Legge-Bourke DCVO CstJ who died peacefully at home surrounded by all her children.

"We are devastated to lose our mother.

"She was an inspiration to us all, and to the many people she met over her years of service to Wales, and the countless organisations and institutions she supported.

"A country girl at heart, she has left an indelible legacy at Glanusk, the wider countryside and beyond."

In 1964, she married Captain William Legge-Bourke, who had served as an equerry to the royal household.

The pair went on have three children and 10 grandchildren.

Dame Shân was also the star of a four-part television documentary into her life called The Lady of Glanusk, which was created by BBC Wales in 2006.

Most members of the Royal Family had been chaperoned by Dame Shân on their visits to Wales, including Queen Elizabeth II.

As a young man, King Charles used to fish at Glanusk during breaks from his term studying at Aberystwyth in 1969.

The estate has most recently been known for providing a location for the annual Green Man Festival, which has been held there since 2007.
