Half of mums feel free in infant feeding choices
PA MediaJust over half of mothers responding to a survey believe Jersey provides a supportive environment for women to make their own infant feeding choices without feeling pressured.
The finding, some 54%, comes from the latest Jersey Opinions and Lifestyle Survey.
It also found that the majority of people asked supported breastfeeding and a woman's right to do so in public places.
Jersey lactation consultant Debra Hennessy, from Family Nursing & Home Care, said professionals had a responsibility to provide information about infant feeding, including the benefits of breastfeeding.
The survey asked islanders whether they agreed with the following statements about breastfeeding:
- Women should feel supported to breastfeed in public
- I would feel comfortable if a mother breastfed near me
- Mothers should be allowed to feed without being hidden
- There is a supportive environment for mothers to make their own feeding choices
Responses were split into two categories, those with children and those without.
In both categories, there was broad support (more than 70%) for the first three statements.
However, when it came to the final statement, 54% of respondents with children agreed that Jersey had a supportive environment for mothers to make feeding choices, while 44% of people without children agreed.
Responding to the survey findings, Ms Hennessy said health professionals had a duty to give parents solid, evidence‑based information about infant feeding, including "the benefits of breastfeeding for both baby and mother".
"This is not about applying pressure, it is about ensuring parents have accurate, scientific knowledge to make informed choices... presented in a supportive, non-judgmental way," she said.
Government of Jersey advice on breastfeeding parents should "base your decision on how to feed your baby on what you feel is right for you and your baby".
It goes on to say: "You may choose not to breastfeed, or it may not be possible due to medication or illness. We will support you in your decisions."
'Empowered and supported'
Responding on behalf of the Government of Jersey, Debbie McCoy, a Health and Care Jersey infant feeding specialist midwife said: "Every family's journey is unique, and our role is to ensure mothers feel empowered and supported, whatever decision they make.
"Across the island, support is available through our hospital midwives, community midwife team, breastfeeding champions, a specialist breastfeeding clinic, health visitors and a breastfeeding buddies support group.
"Our priority is always to provide information, encouragement, and choice, helping families succeed in the way that is right for them."
