Historic castle reopens after repairs to Great Hall

Oakham Castle has reopened after it was closed in September for essential maintenance and repairs.

Rutland County Council said on Thursday the castle had reopened following the completion of works to the interior of the Great Hall.

Dating back to 1180, the castle was originally built as a manor house and was later heavily fortified with walls, a moat and a drawbridge.

The council added the works, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, would help preserve the castle for future generations.

The works included replacing lime plaster and weatherproofing walls inside the Great Hall.

Councillor Rosemary Powell said: "Oakham Castle is a treasured landmark and we're delighted to welcome visitors back.

"The recent repairs have helped maintain its future and we encourage everyone to explore the castle and enjoy the rich history it has to offer."
