Developers want to build 30 new homes on the former Fountain Head Brewery site

An application to build 30 homes on a former brewery site in Halifax has been lodged.

The land in Maltings Road, Wheatley, was home to Fountain Head Brewery, before it closed in 1996.

Parts of the site have already been redeveloped with housing, a nursery, school, community centre and college, but the application site remains vacant.

Submitted to Calderdale Council by Begbies Traynor on behalf of Southdale Ltd, the outline application says the proposals would enable the site to be marketed for development.

The application has a supporting statement by property consultants JLL.

It states: "Begbies Traynor are acting as administrators and represent the interests of the creditors of Southdale Limited who are in administration.

"The intention is to achieve outline consent so the site can be marketed and disposed of to allow the site to be redeveloped."

At this stage the application is outline, with with all matters reserved except for access from Maltings Road, according the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

If successful, a more detailed application would follow, but JLL said the site "has the ability to deliver a variety and mix of housing…in a range of styles".

It is anticipated six homes would be classed as "affordable".

JLL say they understand that the site is considered to be partly greenfield and partly brownfield and argue that developing the site is acceptable given the prevailing character of the area is now residential.

The plans have attracted some objections, primarily over access concerns from Maltings Road, which is a public bridleway used by horse riders and cyclists.

No date has been set for the council to consider the application.
