Leisure centre upgrade after hygiene concerns raised
GooglePeople using an Ayrshire leisure centre had to wash their hands in the swimming pool as there was no water in the ladies' toilets, it has emerged.
It was one of a series of hygiene concerns about Portal Leisure Centre heard by members of Irvine Community Council last week.
They were also told that the ceiling appeared to be coming off in the swimming pool, and that showers were broken.
Facility owners KA Leisure said a "full refurbishment and upgrade" was now underway at the town centre attraction and would last a couple of weeks.
Members had raised concerns there was a problem in the ladies toilets as they found there was no water to wash your hands with.
Some people were using sanitiser but many others did not and were washing their hands in the shower or swimming pool.
They were told two parts of the showers were broken, resulting in people cutting themselves.
And there was no soap in the toilets and the disabled shower did not appear to work, members heard.
The community council heard that the ceiling also looked like it was coming off in the swimming pool.
A spokesperson for facility owners KA Leisure told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "The Portal is currently undergoing a full refurbishment and upgrade of all washing and hygiene facilities.
"This includes the full replacement of all handwashing, hand‑drying and soap‑dispensing units, supported by a renewed service contract to ensure high standards are maintained.
"We expect this work to be fully completed within the next couple of weeks."
The spokesperson added that staff had been reminded of expected standards across the building, while the ceiling area is scheduled for repair.
