County to host more than 100 free heritage events

More than 100 heritage events will be held across East Yorkshire.

The free open days will take place in multiple villages and towns, including Beverley and Hornsea, from 12 to 21 September.

A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council urged visitors to book in advance as events often fill up quickly.

Councillor Nick Coultish said the open days were a "great chance to learn about local history and culture".

Here are some of the highlights of the East Yorkshire heritage open days:

• Norwood House, Beverley Friary, and Number 2 Highgate, the home of Mary Wollstonecraft, will open their doors to the public.

• The Secret Garden, off Minster Moorgate, Beverley, will be open on both weekends between 12 and 21 September.

• There will be guided tours of the World War Two anti-aircraft battery on Butt Farm in Beverley.

• Barges on the Beck will be offering trips and visits to the recently restored Syntan barge in Beverley.

• St Mary's church in Beverley will be hosting a talk on the recent archaeological excavations on the north side and a stained glass workshop.

• Hornsea Inshore Rescue station will welcome visitors and host talks about what they do.

• Hornsea Civic Society has organised walks around the seaside town.

• Walking tours and talks are planned in Goole and Howden.

• Churches will be open to visitors in Goole, Whitgift and Birkin.
