Work has started on Crewe's new £14m police station.

The site on David Whitby Way, off the A500, will house 300 staff and replace the existing facility in the town centre.

The hub is due to include a number of Cheshire Police's departments and its construction is expected to be completed early next year, building firm Willmott Dixon said.

The building would help to provide the force with better access to the "whole of the local policing area, strategic road network and access into Crewe town centre". the firm added.

Chief Constable Mark Roberts said it was important officers, staff and the public had "a modern police station in Crewe which is ideally placed to support the wider area".

"This is a further positive development in bringing our estate up to date following the opening of our new station at Wilmslow," Roberts said.

Dan Price, Cheshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, said the "net-zero project in Crewe delivers on my commitment to modernise our policing estate, creating a smarter, sustainable working environment for officers".

Willmott Dixon said it would be supporting the Cheshire economy by using "local businesses and creating local employment opportunities whenever possible during construction".
