Essential repairs to a historic Worcestershire building which dates back to the 14th Century are set to begin.

Improvements to the Pepperpot in Upton-upon-Severn would take place from 11 March to 17 July, Malvern Hills District Council said.

The works will include accessibility improvements such as the installation of new handrails and the regrading of the existing entrance ramp. The painting of the lantern, cupola and church tower is also due, along with timber repairs.

The council said the Pepperpot was the surviving tower of the former parish church of St Peter and St Paul, and was also the town's oldest building.

The distinctive building received its name due to the shape of the tower, with its hexagonal lantern and copper cupola, which sits at the top.

The building's tourist information centre, heritage centre and its grounds will continue to stay open to the public while the works take place.

Scaffolding will be installed around the tower throughout the repairs.

District councillor John Gallagher said: "It is really important that we preserve and carry out any necessary repairs to this iconic building in Upton, it holds significant historical value for both residents and visitors alike."
