Police say the man's injuries are not likely to be fatal

A man has been injured in a gun attack in north Belfast.

The man, who is in his late 30s, is said to have been shot once in each leg in Strathroy Park just before 20:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Police said paramedics treated the victim and his injuries, while very severe, were not likely to be fatal.

Social Democratic and Labour Party councillor Carl Whyte said the man was shot in an alleyway in a paramilitary-style attack.

Whyte said the attack had caused "lots of fear and disruption" and that the victim would have a "long road to recovery".

Sinn Féin assembly member Gerry Kelly condemned the shooting and said there were "some gunmen masquerading as protectors of the community and are anything but that".

"To have guns on our street now is absolutely and entirely rejected by the people of Ardoyne" he said.

A detective said the attack had "caused fear and disruption in the very community those responsible for this criminal act claim to protect".

Police appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

People would notice a heavy police presence in the area, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said.
