Fire service's chimney safety plea after flat fire
Essex County Fire & Rescue ServiceFirefighters have reminded people to get their chimneys swept regularly following a flat fire.
Crews were called to the blaze in the first-floor apartment in High Street, Halstead, at about 19:00 BST on Wednesday.
The Essex fire service said it managed to contain the flames to the fireplace and living room and no-one was injured.
Station manager Steve Byrne said anyone with an open fire or wood burner should ensure their chimney was swept regularly by a qualified chimney sweep, and should only burn suitable dry materials.
"Regular maintenance and good fire safety habits can prevent chimney fires and keep your home safe," he said.
