Man, 81, seriously injured after being hit by car

An 81-year-old man has serious injuries after being knocked down by a car in Edinburgh city centre just after the bells on New Year's Day.

The incident happened at about 00:30 on Thursday on Queensferry Road near Dean Bridge.

Emergency services went to the scene where they found the man had been hit by a white Suzuki Ignis.

Police Scotland are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Sgt Christopher Bright said: "We know that this was a busy evening with it being Hogmanay and that there were a number of pedestrians and vehicles in the area at the time, so we'd ask those who have yet to speak to us to get in touch.

"In addition, we'd ask those with dash-cam footage to review this to see if it has captured anything significant."
