The Flying Scotsman locomotive is to return to Dorset for 10 days in the autumn.

It will be based at Swanage Railway from 23 October to 1 November, hauling passenger services for five days and on static display for the remaining time.

Widely regarded as the world's most famous steam locomotive, it was the first to officially reach 100mph (161kph).

The 97-tonne engine, owned by National Railway Museum in York, will haul services between Swanage, Harman's Cross, Corfe Castle and Norden.

A Swanage Railway spokesperson said: "This is a hugely exciting moment for the railway and a rare opportunity to see one of the most famous steam locomotives in the world here in Purbeck."
