A library has said it will happily "waive the fine" on a library book that was returned more than 60 years late.

Darlington Library said the copy of Dogs and Their Management by Frederick Cousens was due back on 8 September 1962.

The book was handed back by a customer who had found it while clearing out their loft.

The book was a 1934 edition of the title, which was first published in 1858.

A library spokesperson said the the fine at the time would have been two shillings and sixpence.

"But as we don't charge late fees anymore, we were more than happy to waive the fine," they added.
