Nine in 10 pupils offered first-choice school

Nine in 10 pupils have been offered their first choice secondary school for September, a council said.

Of 8,111 offers to current Year 6 learners in Staffordshire, 93.2% were for a first-choice school, with 99% allocated one of their top three preferences.

Parents across the country are finding out by email and letter which school place they have been allocated after applying before the end of last October.

Staffordshire County Council's cabinet member for education Janet Higgins said: "These results reflect the hard work and commitment of our admissions team, who have worked closely with schools and neighbouring councils."

"It's also testament to parents who really help our admissions team out by getting their applications in either on or before the deadline date, and making sure they put down a total of three preferences.

"These small actions really make a difference when it comes to allocating school places."

Nationally, about 83% of applications were offered their first-choice secondary school in 2025, the council said.

Staffordshire's figures for this year are an improvement on 2025, when 91.6% were allocated their preferred school.

Some schools receive more applications than they have places available, with priority given to those who meet published admissions arrangements.

Offer letters and emails explain what a parent needs to do next to accept or decline the place.

National Primary Offer Day will follow on 16 April.
