The Keighley lights have been designed by local children

Keighley's first Eid lights, which were designed by local children, have been switched on by hometown TV actor Daniel Ismail.

The switch-on was part of a community iftar in Town Hall Square on Tuesday, in which local residents shared dates, food and water to break their fast.

Ismail, who grew up in the town, is known for his role as Det Sgt Khalil Amin in BBC crime drama Virdee, which is set in and around Bradford.

Ismail said: "It's so special, it's such a special day, not just for myself and the amazing kids that have designed these lights, but for the families and community – and I'm so honoured to be here, being a Keighley boy myself."

Eid will be celebrated between 19-20 March

Ramadan, a month of fasting before Eid celebrations, began on 17 February and Eid will be celebrated between 19-20 March.

Many of the lights on North Street and the Civic Centre in Keighley were designed by children from local schools and mosques.

Ismail described the designs as "beautiful".

He said: "Keighley is such a special place to me and seeing all the community, not just members of the Muslim community, but seeing my friends and family who aren't Muslim joining together."
