A major route through the Derbyshire Dales has reopened after it was blocked when a large tree fell and landed on to the road.

Derbyshire County Council said no-one was believed to have been injured when the tree fell on to the A6 in Matlock Bath on Thursday.

The council said on Thursday evening it had reopened the road after it was closed earlier on between the New Bath Hotel and the Temple Road junction.

It added the tree that came down had been situated in a churchyard next to the road.

In a social media post, the authority said: "Thanks to our contractors Thompsons, who were just finishing up for the day at nearby Via Gellia Road where they are removing diseased ash trees, who got straight on it.

"Unfortunately the job took a little longer than expected as the fallen tree caused some damage to trees on the other side of the road which had to be made safe.

"The fallen tree was in a churchyard and not on land where we had previously cleared diseased ash trees a while ago.

"Apologies for the inconvenience and thanks for bearing with us."
